Dossier № 20: Crime and punishment

Nationaal archief, Hof van Holland 465, f. 34v

Introduction

After the Burgundian seizure of power in 1433, new institutions for financial management and justice were introduced at an accelerated pace. The Court of Holland took on the latter role. Here, judgements on appeal and verdicts in criminal cases were handed down by a group of learned jurists. Symon Jacopsz. from Abbekerke, about whom this file deals, had indeed been guilty of a serious crime. The punishment was not lenient.
