Medieval PaleographyPractise reading and transcribing Middle Dutch texts from Dutch and Belgian archives

Medieval charter with a red wax seal

Welcome to the practice module for Medieval Paleography. Here, you can practice transcribing and translating Dutch, English, French and Latin texts from the medieval period. A selection has been made of a variety of texts and source types, each offering a fascinating glimpse into the colorful worldof the late Middle Ages.

You will work with charters, accounts, and registers from dukes, counts, nobles, and city governments, dating from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century.

For each text, a dossier has been created with a detailed introduction and an image of the original medieval document. Below that, you can make a transcription and a translation, which you can verify yourself.
