Nationaal Archief Den Haag, Grafelijkheidsrekenkamer 648a, f. 4r-4v
Introduction
How do you distribute taxes fairly among the population? This question is not only relevant today. In 1514, Charles V and the States of Holland commissioned an enquiry into the taxation of towns and villages in the county of Holland. A commission was sent out with two very specific questionnaires: one for the towns and one for the villages. For seven months, the commission travelled around the county, eventually resulting in a detailed description of almost 300 towns and villages. This document presents the questionnaire for the cities.
Physical Description
Gothic cursiva on paper. The text is contained in a voluminous paper codex (487 folia = 974 pages) with a meticulous description of all towns and villages in Holland.
