Dossier № 4: Haastrecht in Holland

Nationaal Archief Den Haag, Nassause Domeinraad II nr. 317

Modern Translation

Regest: 26 April 1290. Charter of count Floris V of Holland in which he records that knight Hardbern van Haastrecht transfers his land and house in Haastrecht to him of his own free will, in order to receive it back as a fief.

We Floris, Count of Holland announce to anyone who shall see or hear this letter read, that Lord Hartberen van Haastrecht, knight, our faithful feudal man, has freely and voluntarily surrendered to us his castle at Haastrecht with the adjoining farmland and with the other lands surrounding it, to the extent of fifty morgen. We have returned to him his house and his land to keep it from us and our successors as Counts of Holland in fief, so that this house and the land will not fall to us as long as there is anyone living there who is a descendant of him in direct line. And the house shall be freely accessible to us and our descendants to drive in and out of it whenever we and they deem it necessary or desirable. Given at The Hague in the year our Lords 1290 on Wednesday after St Mark's Day.
