Modern Translation

Regest: 26 May 1509. To limit the nuisance of dogs, the Dordrecht city council institutes a dog tax, and orders untaxed dogs to be taken away or put down.

Determined by the City Council on 26 May [1509], on the eve of Pentecost.

To put a stop to unrestraint experienced by many persons on account of the fact that all and sundry keep large and small dogs - against which the good folks used to employ dog butchers and dog hunters. It appears, however, that this has brought little improvement, and the number of dogs has become much greater, so great that one is nowhere left alone by them, and cannot use the street by day or night without fear. If this is not provided for, it is feared that it will lead to much suffering and distress caused by the dogs. This was observed just yesterday in the Steegoversloot, the Augustijnenkamp and elsewhere. To make provision for this shortage, the good people of the city command that every one bring, or cause to be brought, his dog himself between now and tonight 5 o'clock to the ships that will lie, one at the Great Head, the other at the Dirt Gate, which will then carry the dogs outside the city. Or else that he himself kill or drown his dog. If anyone wishes to keep his dog, he shall go to the churchwardens of the parish to which he belongs, have the dog registered and tell them the markings of the coat. For each dog he shall give the church masters ten pennies for the need of the church, and so every year, as long as he has dogs, from each dog ten pennies. If it now appears that anyone, between now and the day after tomorrow, keeps a dog in his house or garden, of which he has not paid the church masters, he shall be fined ten pounds. This at the discretion of the aldermen.

From this, greyhounds and partridge dogs are excepted.

Item command the good people of the town that no one may scold or mock the boatmen and their servants who have to carry away the dogs because they carry away the dogs. At the discretion of the aldermen.
