Dossier № 14: Charles the bold Claims Grave

BHIC, Stadbestuur van Grave

Introduction

In 1473, the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold claimed the right of succession in the Duchy of Gelre and the county of Zutphen. His rights were controversial to say the least. For fourteen years, the principalities had been torn apart in party disputes around the ruling count Arnold and his son Adolf. Charles himself had his eye on Gelre. Like a true Realpolitician, he captured son Adolf and took over Arnold's rights for a pledge of 300,000 Rijnsguldens. Arnold died on 23 February 1473, and in normal circumstances Adolf would succeed him. To prevent this, Charles quickly wrote a letter to the strategically located town of Grave, situated on the border of Brabant and Gelre.
