Modern Translation
Regest: 1514. Instruction for the commission to investigate the state of towns and villages in the county of Holland.
Instruction to the commissioners of the investigation that must necessarily be carried out by them in Holland and (West-) Friesland, so that new, equal schiltalen may be arrived at.
In the large and small towns
- Firstly, to look through the accounts of these cities, in order to know the entire annual income.
- Then to see the inheritance, ransom and annuities they owe, when these annuities were sold, what the pennies from the sale were used for and then the ordinary and extraordinary burdens of the town concerned and the arrears.
- To know what duties and taxes are paid in each town on wine, beer, corn, etc.
- To know of the number of houses in the locality and how much they have increased or decreased in the last ten years, both in price and number.
- Also to know there the number of people going to communion and by how much that number has increased or decreased in the last ten years.
- Item, as much as possible on the general state of the economy and wealth of the city and on the wealth of rentiers and other private persons.
