Modern Translation

Regest: 1415. The Brabant prelates, nobles and towns make a mutual covenant in support of the minor Duke John IV of Brabant.

In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, all who shall see or hear this letter read, A, B, C etc. greetings in the name of God. We wish to make known to all that, because of the great loyalty and friendship which we have always had among ourselves in our country and which we wish to continue in the future, and in order to avert all future resentment, disputes and discussion, and especially because of the honour, interest and profit of our gracious lord Duke John eldest son of our dear lord Anthonis, blessed thoughts, whose soul may God have mercy on, and because of the honour, the interest and the profit of the common country of Brabant, have concluded an agreement to remain together in friendship, fidelity and unity for ever, undivided and unaffected. The following points and articles we shall hold firm and strong, to which we have committed ourselves for eternity. First of all, we have promised and pledge and swear by the saints that henceforth we shall remain together in perpetuity, in unity, stable and inseparable. And whenever we or the country or any of us get into trouble over this matter or any other matter that concerns our gracious lord or his country, we will all help resist it with our lives and with all our might and stay together with each other without seeking any excuse. We prelates and clerics commit ourselves to this as far as is lawful, and no further. And if we or any of us or any private person within the land of Brabant go against this by advice or deed or rebel against this also in any way, we shall, as has been said, restrain and help restrain those or the one who did so by attacking his body and property, so that he or she may cooperate without restraint. And further we promise to keep and help each other keep the privileges, charters and rights, without guile. In charter etc.
