Archief Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland inv. nr. 1.1.1, 855
Modern Translation
Regest: 18 February 1286. Floris V gives permission to the inhabitants of the area between the Ovenzijdewinde, the Zwadenburgerdam, the Zeedijk and the Spaarndam to raise a dam in the Spaarne and manage it.
We, Floris V of Holland make known to all persons who shall see or hear this letter, that on the advice of our good lords, we have given permission to raise a water, called the Spaarne, where the wild sea flows in and destroyed much of our land. This permission we have given to all the people residing between Ovenzuidewende, Zwanenburgerdam, the sea dyke and the said Spaarndam. We further gave permission to make the ring dyke of the said land as long, wide and high as the sworn marsh councils think fit, with an eye to the rights of everyone. We have further promised to those who live within these boundaries, that our bailiff of Rhineland will, now and in the future, inspect this dyke and the sluices therein and pronounce justice thereon, based on the judgement of the sworn heemraden.
Given in the year our Lords 1285, the Monday after Saint Valentine's Day. In our house at The Hague.
