Regest: Collection of city regulations of Deventer (1448) – Oath of an alderman
These are the oaths our citizens will take on St Peter's Day at the seat.
That we will elect the wisest, the best and the most suitable persons as aldermen and councillors, and this for the benefit of the city. May God and his saints assist us in this. Amen.
This is the oath which our new aldermen shall take on St Peter's Day at the seat.
That from this day until Saint Peter's Day of the next year you will preserve and keep all that belongs to the city, the law of the city as it is written down, and the honour of the city; and that, when you administer justice, you will neither by hatred or envy, nor by friendship or family ties, nor by fear or bribery treat unequally the poor and the rich, nor the helpless and those who do have help. May God and his saints assist you in this.
The aldermen will include this in their oath and the councillors in their solemn pledge.
