Dossier № 16: Dangerous games

Stadsarchief Sint Truiden, SAST 20. Residuum der Keuren der ambachten, 1447, f. 160r

Modern Translation

Regest: 21 November 1485. Lord and city council of Sint-Truiden prohibit war games on the city ramparts.

Lords and city council agree and stipulate that henceforth young children shall not go on the ramparts and towers with banners and the like, or elsewhere, nor storm them, throw stones or shout ‘Burgundy’ or ‘Arenberg’. Nor shall they add malicious words such as ‘Picardian’ or ‘Brabant’, ‘Arenberger’ or similar. This on pain of a pilgrimage to St Martin (= Sint-Martensvoeren?) every time it happens. And the children who are big enough must undertake the pilgrimage themselves. And the father and mother of the small children must go in their place, so that they don't have to go themselves, or buy off the pilgrimage. And children who are not rich enough to pay for the pilgrimage, they will be chastised.
