Dossier № 11: Slander!
Algemeen Rijksarchief Brussel, Handschriftenverzameling 730, f. 5r-5v
Modern Translation
Regest: 14 July 1420. Brabant nobles and the city of Leuven reply to Jan of Bavaria's letter of 1 July 1420 (see dossier no. 10), indicating that they would be more attentive to duke and duchy than the duke's current advisers.
Noble and powerful, dear lord. We have received your open letter which you have written to some of us, reporting that you had heard that we had made, written and drafted many points which would be directed against our dear gracious lord and against the lordship of Brabant and other things, to his great harm and detriment, and that, moreover, we would not be satisfied with this, but would do our utmost to induce his other cities and countries to resign their obedience to him, contrary to God's will, and to all right, reason and judgment. This supplemented by more words and arguments which you loved to add and write to it. In reply, we inform your honour that by devious whispers and information you are writing such letters about us, which are so slanderous of our honour, decency and judgment. We are by no means people who do or would intend such things. Accordingly, we have only undertaken and set in motion things that benefited the honour and interest of our lord and the prosperity of the common land of Brabant, as, God willing, will become evident in the future. And God grant that those who are in Brabant and have daily dealings with His Grace and are bound to him by their oaths, advised him and acted as we would have liked to do - and are still willing to do - then he would not have lost so many lands and subjects as he has now. This your grace will know better than we do. We have always been willing to obey, and still are.
Engelbrecht Count of Nassau
William Count of Sayn
Thomas lord of Diest
Jan lord of Wezemaal
John lord of Schoonvorst
John lord of Rotselaar
And all other lords, each written by name.
And the city of Leuven.
